Father Toussaint Kafarhire Murhula, a member of the Society of Jesus (SJ/Jesuites) and an academic, called for a non-violent resistance to the invasion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by neighbouring countries, evoking the memory of Archbishop Christophe Munzihirwa Mwene Ngabo, who was murdered for having issued a similar appeal while he was archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bukavu in the DRC.
In an interview with Catholic Voices, a department of the Pan-African Network for Catholic Theology and Pastoral Care (PACTPAN), Father Toussaint, who is president of the African Association of Studies (ASAA), called on the Congolese to courageously address the government in order to put an end to the sufferings of the population, especially in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while the « worse escalation » the violent conflict that is spreading.
During the meeting with Father Stan Chu Ilo, the coordinating servant of PACTPAN, Father Toussaint categorically declared that there is nothing comparable to the rebels of the Movement of 23 March (M23) in the DRC, and that the people fighting in this country rich in minerals are in fact soldiers of Rwanda sent by the president of the country, Paul Kagame.
The educator, theologian and professor of political science, known for his research on good governance, peace and ecological justice, among others, challenged the claims that what is happening in the eastern part of the DRC is an ethnic violence, with the Tutsis of Rwanda fighting for their compatriots Tutsis of DRC.
